11th November - The John Griffiths Quartet £6.50 (Members £5) After
appearing two years running at a Village Festival with a 1940s
theme, this quartet now has a repertoire of tunes from the days
of the wireless and 78rpm records! Mike Bell (guitar) and
David Frew (piano) share the lead with Roy Cansdale on double
bass (and announcements!), and John at the drums. Thursday
28th October - The Jamil Sheriff Ensemble £7.50 (Members £6) Whether
playing standards or his own lyrical compositions Jamil is a
pianist of melodic invention, here sharing arrangements and
inspiration with members of his highly acclaimed octet. Andrew
Colman on trumpet and flugel, Zoltan Dekany on double bass and
John Perry on drums. Thursday
23rd September - Swing de Paris

legacy of "Hot Club" jazz still endures in France 70
years on ! Guitarists Neil Harrison and Jon Moore,
inspired by their recent sessions in Paris, both feature on
melody and rhythm, led by Bruce Carnaffin on clarinet, recalling
the occupation years when woodwind replaced the violin (but not
the bass violin) Friday

voice that echoes legendary singers in a repertoire of legendary
songs. Supported by three of Tyneside's best jazz musicians ~

(Members £6 Students £3) Celebrating
big band styles from the classic era of Duke Ellington, Count
Basie and Woody Herman to present day arrangements by US
bandleader Gordon Goodwin, this orchestra is a showcase for the
very best of Lancashire's young
musicians.

four outstanding musicians to accompany and embellish a

melodic jazz and subtle interaction from ace guitarist Pat

11th March - Groovin'
High £6.50 (Members £5) In
1945 this tune defined Bebop for Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie
Parker and is the inspiration for this sextet's approach to
arranging standards, not just from the forties but also the
fifties and sixties. Mel Dodd is in the trumpet's chair, the
reeds are Paul Froggatt (tenor sax) and John Woodhouse (alto sax
and clarinet) and the rhythm section is Mike Reynolds
(keyboards), Laurence Canty (bass) and Peter Froggatt (son of
Paul - drums) demonstrating that Jazz can appeal to a new
generation! Thursday
19th February - Sheena Davis
Group £9 (Members £7.50) Regularly
appearing at Ronnie Scott's and other top Jazz venues in London
this group still has an enthusiasm for touring and is thrilling
audiences everywhere. Sheena Davis has an ear for choosing
melodic songs from the popular music charts and presenting them
with a sparkling jazz flavour. Her voice is powerful, the
delivery crisp and the intonation perfect. The group is
completed by bassist Robert Rickenberg, Matt O'Regan (keyboard)
and Dylan Howe (drums). Thursday
22nd January - Jazzology
£6.50 (Members £5) Since
their debut at the Brewery lasy year this band has produced two
CDs and attracted bookings for major jazz festivals. Dave Lee's
tone and technique on the clarinet is sublime, leading this
quartet in a feast of swinging standards, latin and some
intriguing originals. Guitarist Willy Fluss orchestrates the
changes with Simon Goulding taking the bass lines (with
incredible dexterity) against a foundation of tempo and rhythm
from Ian Bell at the drums. 2003 |
