Wednesday 11th July - John Hallam (tenor sax & clarinet) and Trio

"The Jazztet finds Hallam in stunning form, equally impressive on tenor and baritone saxes and on clarinet. Influences can be detected (Hawk, Webster,Carney and Goodman among them), but from these he has developed an individual style characterised by an airy swing, a lyrical approach to improvising,an unflagging dynamism and prevailing good taste"

"Outstanding vocalist teamed with a great saxophonist." Scarborough Jazz

"Our entertainers were the acclaimed Julie Edwards Quintet. Julie is a fine jazz vocalist with a soft tonal quality that can suddenly burst into life with venomous power but then as easily shink backto beguiling charm...quite superb. Kevin Dearden..was on top form with sax and flute." Grimsby Telegraph

Wednesday 10th October - Tim Kliphuis with Roly Veitch & Roy Cansdale

Tim Kliphuis ranks among the world’s finest jazz violinists. Hailing from Holland, his first international recognition came after he joined Belgian gypsy jazz guitarist Fapy Lafertin in 1999. Their co-operation resulted in three acclaimed CDs and tours in Europe and the UK.

Since he embarked on a solo career in 2004, Kliphuis has performed with such world-renowned jazz players as Les Paul, Bob Wilber, Herb Geller, Bucky Pizzarelli and Stochelo Rosenberg. He has played jazz festivals all over the world, including North Sea Jazz, La Villette (Paris), Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Djangofests in Seattle, Chicago and Philadelphia and clubs such as Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express (London) and Iridium Jazz Club (New York).

With his new London-based Quartet, featuring Len Skeat, Mitch Dalton and James Pearson, he recorded The Grappelli Tribute (2005) which was released to rave reviews. This line-up enables Tim to fuse more and more of his classical background into jazz.

Tim's Grappelli Workshops often accompany concerts on tour. He is now working his broad teaching experience into a violin tuition book about Stéphane Grappelli's style.

Tim Kliphuis plays Artiste strings by John Pearse.

Wednesday 12th December - Mainline Jazz

L to R - Tim Belford, Bruce Carnaffin, Ken Oates, Brian Judge, Roy Cansdale, Peter Boswell

"From Dixieland to Swing and all stops in between"

Based in the South Lakes but drawing its personnel from as far away as Settle and Carlisle (cue for a railway line, but not the only reason for the band's name), Mainline Jazz is a Dixieland - to- mainstream outfit which has been together for about 12 years in all, and 4 years with its current line-up. Although the basis of our material is robust and entertaining traditional jazz, the band is more than capable of branching out into smooth ballads and even bossa-nova, which stands us in good stead when playing at weddings and birthday parties.

The band consists of:

Brian Judge (trumpet, flugelhorn and vocals).

Brian has done the lot - big bands, brass bands, pit work and every kind of small band jazz from basic to bebop. We're delighted that he agreed to join us when Phil Morris disappeared darn Sarf, and his fiery but accomplished playing gives a firm lead to the band sound.

Peter Boswell (trombone and cornet)

Born in Baghdad (the reason for his sometimes explosive trombone playing?), Peter has history in Cheltenham and Sheffield but is now tucked away in Giggleswick, from which Yorkshire base he makes marauding forays into Lancs and Cumbria. He plays solid tailgate or attacking swing-style trombone as the occasion demands.

Bruce Carnaffin (clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor sax)

Veteran journeyman reed player, nominal leader of the band and author of these descriptions. Modesty forbids any further comment.

Tim Belford (keyboard)

Our token octogenarian, but you'd never know it from his playing. Tim has played in all sorts of settings, including Carlisle's legendary Gateway Jazz Band, led by the late Mick Potts. His fleet-fingered versatility is a big part of the band's success.

Roy Cansdale (double bass)

Well-known and much in demand around the North West jazz scene, Roy's dependable and propulsive bass lines, played on his distinctive blond instrument, more than fulfil the bassman's job of anchoring the band.

Ken Oates (drums)

Also a classical tympanist, Ken brings considerable technique to the drum chair. Although not a show-off - no Buddy Rich or Louis Bellson excesses - his all-too-infrequent breaks and solos always rouse the audience. However, most of the time he is content to swing the band from a back seat.
